Retailers in and around Quebec’s metropolis have been gearing up for this reality ever since Premier François Legault put the province’s economy on “pause” to deal with the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.
On May 18, Legault finally gave Montreal-area businesses the green light they were waiting for — with a catch. Only stores with street access will be allowed to reopen Monday, while malls remain closed until further notice.
What will the restart look like?
Initially at least, store hours will be reduced to allow for thorough and more frequent cleaning. The Bay, which is reopening across Quebec Monday, plans to operate from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Simons, which is reopening four Montreal-area locations Monday, will operate from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and remain closed Sunday.
