A caravan with about a hundred vehicles left Kahnawake Saturday morning to drive across the Mercier Bridge — and back — at a snail’s pace as part of a “rolling blockade” to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the Oka Crisis.

Kahnawake residents had gathered to remember the landmark event — a 78-day standoff between Quebec Mohawks and Canadian soldiers over the proposed expansion of a golf course in Oka.Thirty years later, the impasse over land rights remains unresolved.

A similar commemoration is due to take place later this morning in Kanesatake. A press conference withNew Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh and former NDP MP Romeo Saganash is scheduled to follow.
